HOW TO USE PREPOSITIONS


Prepositions=The word which is used before noun or pronoun relating other
                      word of the sentence, is called Preposition.

HOW TO USE PREPOSITIONS: "preposition generally, but not always, goes before its noun or pronoun. One of the undying myths of English grammar is that you may not end a sentence with a preposition. But look at the first example that follows".

Just do not use extra prepositions when the meaning is clear without them.

Correct: That is something I cannot agree with.

Correct: Where did you get this?

Incorrect: Where did you get this at?

Correct: How many of you can I depend on?

Correct: Where did he go?


Incorrect: Where did he go to?


Use of IN –
1.If any object in under any thing
Example-
*My mother is cooking in kitchen.
*I swam in a river yesterday.

2.Showing of wearing of any person
Example-
*He was in a black shirt.
*Ram was in the golden ring when I saw him.


 NOTE-IF Wearing is given in sentence then NO USE OF IN.
 Example-
 *she was wearing in a red saree(wrong)
 *she was wearing a red saree(right).
 *she was in red saree(right)

3.Medium of conversation/writing.
Example-
*he spoke in English.
*she wrote me in red ink

4.showing the number of time.
Example-
*ram returned in two days.

5.Before-Year/Month/Century/season
Example-
*ram met me in july.
*we got freedom in twentieth century.

6.for permanent  action
Example-
*I am in education.
*my brother is in railways
.
7.when a article use before parts of day
Example-
*in the night
*in the evening

NOTE-if no article use then AT use with parts of day.
Example-
*at night
*at noon


8.when a adjective use before means of transport.
Example-
*in my car
*in a bus

NOTE-if no adjective use then BY use with means of transport
 Example-
*by car
*by bus

9.when exact address is not given.
Example-
*she lived in asia.
*ram lives in india.


Use of  INTO-

1.when any objet come from outside to inside with motion.
Example-
*he came into my room.
*she  jumped into river to save a child.

NOTE-Never use INTO with ENTER.
Example-
*she entered my room.(right)
*she entered into my room.(wrong)

2.when condition of noun or pronoun change.
Example-
*milk is changed into curd.
*grapes is changed into wine.

3.when sentence translate or transform
Example-
*transform the sentence into passive voice.
* translate the following sentence into hindi.


Use of AT

1.for exact time
Example-
*he gets up at 5 am.

2.for exact address
Example-
*she live at malviya nagar delhi.

3.for exact position
Example-
*he is at the first position.
*sita is at the bottom in class.


4.for rate/pace
Example-
*she sold petrol at Rs 70/Ltr.
*he drives his car at 100 kms/hour.

5.for age
Example-
*my father is at fifty.

NOTE-when age come with years old then no use of AT.
 Example-
*he is five years old(right)
*he is at five years old(wrong)
*he is at five(right).

6.for temporary action/continuous work
Example-
*I am at play now(I am playing now)
*now I am working at TCS  project.


Use of ON

1.When one object touching other object
Example-
*my books are lying on the table.

2.before Dte and Day
Example-
*he will return on Monday.
*She finished her work on 15 april,2015

3.Before celebration and festival
Example-
*he came on holi.

NOTE-IF invite word use then only TO preposition use
Example-
*he was invited to my birthday.
*I invited him to my birthday.

4.with Parts of Day+Day/date
Example-
*he returned on the night of Sunday.
*he came to meet me on the evening of 15 Aug,2015.

5.If any object depend on other object.
Example-
*we live on food and water.
*the writer survives on writing.


6.when a adjective come before Cycle/scooter/motorcycles.
Example-
*he was arriving on his bicycle.
*she came to school on motorcycle.

7.for riding
Example-
*on a camel.
*on horses back.

8.to show relation /subject
Example-
*this book is on mathematics.


Use of OVER

1.In case of above without touching object.
Example-
*the fan is running over us.
*aero planes fly over the huts.

2.in case of completely cover
Example-
*Spread the sheet over the bed

3.for one side to other site
Example-
*a bridge has built over the bridge.


Use of BY

1.For measurement
Example-
*by the kg
*by the liter

2.to show the means
Example-
*he sent me letter by post.
He returned my money by cheque.

3.before agent/doer in case of passive voice.
Example-
*ram was taught by me.
*she was given a book by him.


Use of THROUGH

1.For one side to other site(inside)
Example-
*a snake entered my room through a window.
*two friends were passing through a forest.

2.to show by means of
Example-
*We knew about his death through television.


Use of WITH

1.To do work with help of any thing.
Example-
*he went to cinema with his parents.

2.to show the helping means
Example-
*she was cutting vegetables with a knife.

3.to show the manner of working
Example-
*maharana pratap fought with bravery.
*he solved the problem with intelligence.

4.to show features/quality
Example-
*I with a bag in my hand was going to delhi.

NOTE-1.If AGREE/ANGRY+PREP.+PERSON then use WITH
EXAMPLE-
*I was agree with him.
2. If AGREE/ANGRY+PREP.+THING then use ON
Example-
*I was angry on this matter.

Use of OF

1.for possession/relation
Example-
*he is a brother of mine.
*I saw a pen of ram.

2.to choose one object from something
Example-
*he is one of the most intelligent boys.

3.some word always come with OF preposition
Example-
*proud of,take care of,get rid of,instead of,cured of,ashamed of,
*full of,aware of,sure of, etc.


Use of BETWEEN

1.for two thing only
Example-
*the war of haldighati was fought between akbar and pratap.


NOTE-BETWEEN always come with AND,not with TO
Example-
*ram distributed toys between her and me(right)
* ram distributed toys between her to  me(worng)

2.to show duration
Example-
*our institution runs between Monday and Saturday.

3.between to place
Example-alwar is situated between jaipur and delhi.

4.to show the difference
Example-
*what is difference between cow and buffaloes.

NOTE-After DISTINGUISH no use BETWEEN
EXAMPLE-
*He distinguish between me and her(wrong)
*he distinguish me and her(right)


Use of AMONG

1.For more than two thing
Example-
*prize were distributed among the students.

2.for more than two place
Example-
*Srinagar is situated among many hills.


Use of FROM

1.for separation/departure
Example-
*she went from delhi to jaipur.

NOTE-FROM always come with TO, not with AND

2.to show duration
Example-
*the offices open from Monday to Saturday.

3.when one noun completely change in other noun.
Example-
*wine is made from grapes.
*curd is made from milk.

NOTE-when only shape is changed then use OF
Example-
*I was in a ring made of gold(right)
*I was in a ring made from gold(wrong)
4.to show the origin/sources
Example-
*apples are brought from kasmir.


Use of TO

1.Too show destination
Example-
*she went to jaipur.

NOTE-no preposition use before HOME,but a adjective come before preposition then use.
Example-
*I went to his home(right)
*I went to home(worng)
*I went home(right)

2.to transfer any thing
Example-
*I said to him.

3. SAY/PROPOSE/SUGGEST when these word come with object
Example-
*she suggested tome.
*she said to me.

4.in sense of before time
Example-
*it is ten minutes of two.
*ram is half to eight.


Use of BESIDE and BESIDES

1.BESIDE-nearer to any object
Example-
*she lived beside me.
2.BESIDES-in advance or additional
Example-
*ram plays cricket besides football.

Use of ALONG
1.For one bank to other bank
Example-
*I walks along river.

Use of UP
1.in sense of climbing from down to up
Example-
*I know how to climb up a tree.



Use of UNDER
1.in sense of under without touching object
Example-
*the cat is sitting under the table.

Use of ACROSS
1.in sense of nearer to a object
Example-
*my friend lives across the road.  

Use of IN SPITE and DESPITE
1.Both have same meaning(cause of) but use is different
Example-
* in spite of hard work ,he failed(right)
*despite of hard work,he failed(right)
*in despite of hard work,he failed(wrong).

NO preposition use with some verb-
consider,resign,invade,order,request,advise,command,investigate,succeed, resist,emphasise,accompany,join,affect,attack,discuss,describe,enter,ensure,tell,demand,reason
Example-
*He reached at the station(wrong)
*he reached the station (right)
     
Use of ON TIME
1.For fix time
Example-
*exam start on time.
      
Use of IN TIME
1.Before fix time
Example-
